"We're definitely not good, but we ain't all bad, either"

The Murder of Crows

Crooked Halos Book 3

by

KC Bear

Genre: Erotic Romance

   Mercy

Eight years ago, he promised he'd be back for me. He promised he'd take care of me. But he lied. And I was left to pick up my own shattered pieces.

Then, all of a sudden, he was back. I hated that he looked so good, that his endless and insistent need to fix me made it harder to hate him. No, somewhere in there, while we made a family all our own and he showed off his Daddy colors, my innocent childhood crush on him turned into love.

  Jensen

I told her I'd be back for her. It took me eight years, and when I did find her again, she was pissed at me. She had every right to be, sure, but nothing she said or did would keep me away or run me off again. I had lots of hurts to apologize for and issues to help heal.

So, I vowed to heal her. With laughter, forgiveness, trust, a new family --- and orgasms. What I hadn't planned on doing was falling in love with her.

The Murder of Crows is a novel of about 70K words. It is the continuation, and conclusion, of Mercy and Jensen's story from Merry Christmas, Soldier (but can be read as a standalone). There are triggers, listed in the front of the book, or you may contact the author. It's not intended for anyone younger than 18 years of age. It ends with a Happily Ever After.

Happy Valentine’s, Biker

Crooked Halos Book 2

He's a maverick, rough and ready.

She's sweet, scared and desperate with an underlying fire.

When they meet, is it one night?

Or is she his light?

   Psycho

I had one job, and I did it. Kick ass and take names, just like always. I was beyond exhausted, ready to fall into bed and call it a night. Then, I saw her.

Every bit of darkness within me wanted her, and not even the abuse she'd been through that night with her scumbag boyfriend would stop me from getting her.

I'd found my prey, my Sunshine, and nothing would stop me from claiming what was mine.

Not even her.

Happy Valentine's, Biker is a prequel novella under 15K words and is book 1.5 in the Crooked Halos series. It's not intended for readers under 18 years of age or with certain triggers (see author for details).

Merry Christmas, Soldier

Crooked Halos Book 1

Merry Christmas, Soldier is an 11K novella written in first person past tense. It is a taboo romance with an 18 year age gap between them; all characters are of legal, consenting age.

Jensen is in the military, and Mercy was born premature; if any of that might possibly be a trigger, proceed with caution.

It is a prequel, which means there's more to the story --- and yes, it ends on a cliffhanger...
There is cussing, slight kink, and sexual situations. Again, proceed with caution.
This is not intended for anyone under the age of 18.

When I was little, I thought everyone had stories in their head. When I found out only special people had stories to tell, I wanted to be one of the magical ones who shared their stories with the world. I wrote my first book in kindergarten with the help of my teacher, Mrs. Daniels. My mom - my biggest fan and most ardent supporter - has that little crayon-drawn book tucked into the pages of her family bible. It took almost thirty years to get from there to published but here I am, making my own dreams come true, one happily ever after at a time.

Ashley gazed around the lavish cabin designated for her and wiped her clammy palms on her jeans. Her heart had been thumping a rapid tattoo ever since she’d stepped foot onto the luxurious pleasure craft. I can’t believe I’m going through with this.

Christmas carols played over the cabin’s speakers and a cheery red poinsettia sat on the coffee table, a green and gold embossed card propped against its pot.

Ashley Carlisle, we welcome you to the annual Sydney Billionaires’ BDSM Christmas Auction. Good luck.

She selected a holly-adorned mint from a crystal bowl and popped it into her mouth. There was just one billionaire that she was interested in, and she’d been studying his likes and dislikes for weeks. She’d honed her mind and body, even gaining a few kilos to obtain the full, curved backside and hips that he so desired. Hours of lunges, squats and other tortuous exercises had helped her achieve the “rounded butt” look. She prayed that her hard work would pay off and that she’d snag the undivided attention of her target, Talbot Stone. Even his name, Talbot, held an apt foreboding—messenger of destruction.

Just thinking of the Stone name left a sour taste in her mouth. The elder Stone had been the man who had ruined her father and sent him to an early grave. Now it was time for Ashley to recoup some of the money lost to her family. The Stones were an unscrupulous lot, intent on stepping over and on anyone to get what they desired. And what they desired, above all else, was money. She was sure Talbot Stone was no different than his father—proud, egotistical and entitled.

As far as Ashley could see, the Stone men didn’t have many weaknesses. They owned various companies, had their fingers in any pie that would prove lucrative, and if things didn’t work out as they’d planned, they had no problems spinning the situation to suit their needs. They were ruthless in business and Ashley would be no match for them in that quarter. Her one chance to get at Talbot Stone would be through this BDSM auction. Through her study of the man, she had discovered that in BDSM circles, he was a well-known Dom, one who submissives lusted after. A Dom with money, power and looks, and every year, he participated in the Christmas auction. She wasn’t an experienced submissive, but she’d dabbled enough to understand what was required of her. If she was successful at the auction, she’d have an opening to Talbot and his life, but, more importantly, his money. She just had to hold his interest for the full seven days. By all accounts, he was quick to boredom, so she needed to obtain, then keep his attention.

Her plan had more holes than Swiss cheese. What if another Dom won her? What if Talbot Stone had no interest in her? What if she couldn’t stick it out? What if she wasn’t a good submissive? The “what ifs” seemed endless. Her short-term goal was gaining Talbot’s interest. If she got that far, if he won her at the auction, she’d need to last for a week before her payment was granted. And there was a certain poetic justice, skewed though it might be, in deceiving him. She was tough. She could endure a week of the enigmatic and powerful Talbot Stone. It could be worse. He could look like the hunchback of Notre Dame. She giggled, relieving some of the tension in her chest. Despite the nerve-wracking situation, a frisson of excitement skipped down her spine. I might even enjoy this a little.

The cabin vibrated and the boat rocked, signalling that they were moving away from the private wharf. She gazed out through the window at the city lights surrounding Sydney Harbour and tried not to worry about the looming auction. She needed to be strong and confident, a mix of sassy but submissive —a combination that would take everything in her to pull off.

She had to do something to relax. She wandered into the adjoining bathroom and turned on the taps for the tub. Various products were lined up on the countertop in assorted fragrances reminiscent of Christmas. She chose a spicy brandy and orange-scented oil and poured it under the running water, then she lit a Christmas pudding candle, imbuing the room with the familiar scent of cinnamon and cloves. She undressed, tied her hair into a topknot then slipped into the fragrant water.

The long soak in the tub left her relaxed and refreshed and she had succeeded in calming her nerves. Now she stood, assessing her reflection in the full-length mirror.

It had taken her an age to create her outfit, but she was pleased with the result. Candy canes fashioned into a skirt and woven into fishing line floated low on her rounded hips, finishing just above mid-thigh. Red, white and green Christmas mints snaked in circles around each of her full breasts. She’d pulled her long auburn hair into a high ponytail and tied it with a red ribbon. She’d kept her makeup natural but had painted her lips a bright crimson to keep to the Christmas theme. Candy-cane jewellery circled her wrists in the form of cuffs. Strappy red stilettos finished the look. The effect was whimsical but sexy. If luck was on her side, she’d start a bidding war.

She scanned her notecards on Talbot Stone one last time. She had to play her part to perfection to extract a high bid from the man. She needed the money. She loved her job as a social worker, but her student loans were extensive. She also wanted to look after her mother and sister, and she was determined to make Talbot Stone pay.

She startled as the cabin intercom crackled to life and a disembodied voice requested her presence at the staging area. The auction was about to commence.

* * * *

Talbot Stone stared out through the window of his assigned state room, his chin resting on his thumb and forefinger as he pondered the evening ahead. Some Doms requested a dossier of the submissives for auction, pouring over the pages and photos for weeks in advance. Talbot had never done that. He preferred the excitement of the unknown, the surprise of seeing that submissive, “the one” on stage as if presented to him like a gift. It was a Christmas auction, after all, and he considered his chosen submissive a reward to himself. He’d unwrap his “gift” as if she were the most special present in the world. After that, he couldn’t say that he would be so careful. His cock thickened and lengthened as he imagined what he’d do with his new submissive. Tying her up for the first time and turning her ass a beautiful shade of pink to red would be exquisite. Would she cry and scream for him to stop, or would she take it silently? Would she be quick to safeword? He hoped not. There was nothing more annoying than a sub who safeworded at the first sign of discomfort. The submissives on the auction block he’d expect to be practiced in the art, but the thought of an inexperienced sub was more than a little intriguing. That would add a whole new dimension to things.

He checked his watch — a little over an hour until the auction would start. The anticipation was clawing at his spine and tightening his chest. Soon he would have his new submissive.

She’s always been proud of her sensual nature. Now it seems to have landed her in an impossible situation. Two lovers…and she wants them both.

Ruby Jones has clear priorities. Her teenage son comes first, then her struggling blues club. Her love life ranks as a distant third, despite the efforts of Zeke Chambers to convince her otherwise. Zeke's the lead singer in her house band, a devoted friend, and an occasional lover. He can drive her wild with desire, but can't get her to make a commitment. Deserted by her cheating ex-husband, Ruby's determined she's going to make it on her own. She's hot-blooded like her bluesman daddy, happy to satisfy her physical cravings, but she's not about to let any man into her heart.

The stranger who takes the stage on open mike night upsets the delicate balance in Ruby's world. From the moment Ruby sets eyes on him, Remy Saint-Michel inspires irresistible lust and inexplicable sympathy. Confused, guilty and worried about her prized independence, Ruby decides that the only way to deal with the two men is to push them both away. Zeke and Remy, however, have other ideas.

A Moment in Time

Unlike many authors, I rarely base my characters on real people. I might borrow a trait here and there from individuals I’ve known, but for the most part both my protagonists and my villains are fictional inventions.

Wild About That Thing is an exception. The character of Remy Saint-Michel grew out of an actual experience I had, a number of years ago.

I should say, by the way, that I love the blues. Listening to almost any music is an emotional experience, but blues music touches me in a way that few other genres can. I love its passion, its honesty and its recognition of our precious, broken humanity. I feel it in my body as well as my soul; when I am listening to the blues, I can’t sit still.

Anyway, one Saturday night my husband and I went to a nearby pub to hear a local blues band we’d read about. They were fantastic. I sat there, entranced, swaying to the beat. Most of the audience were doing the same. Though the place was crowed, some people were even dancing.

Then I noticed a man sitting on a tall stool, not far from our seats, an incredibly handsome black man with a shaved head, high cheekbones and full lips. He wore slim jeans and a white business shirt with rolled up sleeves. One leg was outstretched; the other rested on a rung of his seat. For some reason I noticed his shoes, expensive, highly polished leather that seemed out of place in the casual venue.

He was gorgeous, but he never glanced in my direction. Indeed, what fascinated me about this guy was his utter stillness. Unlike the rest of us, he didn’t tap his toes, nod his head or drum his fingers on this thigh. Totally focused on the stage, he didn’t move a muscle. The intensity with which he regarded the band sent a little chill down my spine. I couldn’t help wondering who this gentleman was, how he happened to be there, and what was going through his mind.

Years later, I can still summon my odd reaction to this guy. He became the model for Remy in Wild About That Thing. Indeed, I borrowed some of that real world scene for the novella.

Of course, I’ll never know what was actually going through that stunning black man’s mind as he stared at the band.

For that, I had to use my imagination.

Excerpt (PG)

He looked pretty good himself. He wore his work clothes—trim navy blue chinos and a striped shirt with a button-down collar. The trousers weren’t as tight as the jeans he wore when he was off-duty, but they couldn’t hide the bulk of his hard-on. His eyes sparkled like sapphires under his bushy blond brows and a lock of his honey-colored hair hung down over his forehead. She fought the urge to brush it back into place.

“I thought maybe I could join you two for dinner,” he continued. “Then maybe after, we can all watch a video or something.”

He didn’t say anything more, but she knew what he was thinking. After Isaiah was safe in his bed, maybe Zeke could spend some time in hers.

Ruby remembered her assignation with Remy—remembered the insane lust he’d inspired. It had been intoxicating, but scary too. For a moment, all she wanted was to say yes to Zeke’s unspoken question, to trade the risky promise of a stranger for more familiar pleasures. But she’d given her word to Remy. Anyway, what gave Zeke the right to barge in to her life, assuming she’d be available?

“We’d love for you eat with us,” she began, trying to be gentle. “But afterward, I’ve got a date.”

Zeke’s forehead knitted into a frown. “A date?” His voice was dark as gathering thunderclouds. “Who with?”

Ruby laid her hand on his arm. That was a mistake. The feel of his warm, firm flesh under the fine cotton made her want to take it all back—to swear that she wanted only him, to beg him to fuck her. “I don’t think you need to know,” she said, her eyes cast downward

She felt like such a traitor. Of course, they’d agreed when they began that their relationship should be non-exclusive. Still, she hadn’t been with anyone else, not for two years. Why should she, when she had a strong, sexy, generous man like Ezekiel Chambers?

But Remy…she’d never experienced anything like the magnetic pull she’d felt in his presence. She had to find out what it would be like to fuck him. To get him out of her system.

“Thanks for being honest,” Zeke said softly. “That’s something at least.”

“I’d never lie to you, baby. That’s just plain wrong. Otis taught me that. It’s just this one time, anyway.”

“You do what you need to do, Ruby. It won’t change how I feel about you.” He blinked once or twice, then stood up. “Guess I should go.”

“No, please—stay for dinner. Just pizza and salad, but we’d love to have you. I’m sure that Isaiah will want to tell you the big news about his band.”

“You sure?”

“Positive.” Ruby gave him a hug, fighting the urge to rub herself against the still-obvious lump in his groin. “Let’s go call Antonio’s.”

“You got someone to stay with the kid while you’re out?” Zeke asked, as Ruby retrieved the pizza menu stuck onto the refrigerator door.

“Um—no… He’ll be okay. It’s just a couple hours.” Ruby’s doubts resurfaced. Maybe she really should call Remy and cancel. Things were just too complicated…

“I’ll hang out here until you get back, then.”

“What?” Ruby stared at him, astonished and grateful. “You’re gonna babysit, while I go meet another man? What are you, some kind of saint?”

“Nah, I’m just a guy who loves you and wants you to be happy. I know you won’t be able to relax if Isaiah’s home alone.”

Ruby rewarded him with a kiss. What had she done to deserve him? “You know me too well, baby.”

“I do, darlin’. You’re like Skynard’s free bird. Ain’t nobody can put you in a cage.”
