 “You bastard!” Julie screamed and pulled her arm back to strike Victor a third time, but he grabbed her arm before she could. I’d never seen that look on his face before. I’d never seen him quite that angry before. His eyes were almost black. His teeth jammed together, pulling his bronzed skin tight over his jaw.

“Lorenzo! You promised me,” Julie whined.

Lorenzo sighed loudly, almost as if he were bored now. He inspected a fingernail. “Hold him,” he ordered.

“Fer fuck!” Victor cursed, right before Julie hauled off and hit him one more time.

“How do you like it, Victor? Being hurt and humiliated in front of everyone?”

I saw her fist clench. “No,” I breathed. I was not going to let her punch him. Everyone had their attention on Julie and Victor, so they didn’t have time to stop me.

I ran up behind and immobilized her arm in midair. I scooped my foot in front of her legs, tossing her to the ground. I forgot all about not trying to hurt her. The rage I felt at her for slapping his beautiful face blinded me to anything else. I dropped forearm after forearm about her head and shoulders. Vaguely, I acknowledged the steel bindings in my brace, but I didn’t care.
