Our client suspects David Harris of being unfaithful. Every Wednesday for the past month he has been home late. His excuse – working late.
You are to follow David Harris from work (address on back page). He is expected to leave his office at 18:00. He drives a silver BMW, (registration number also on back page). You are to follow him for a maximum of three hours, and take photographic evidence of anything deemed to be suspicious or adulterous.
Report needs to be complete by the closing of the next day.
After skimming the address and car registration on the back page, Monica closes the file and heads to knock on the door of Fiona’s office.
“Yes?”
Monica pushes the door open. “Only me. I’ve read the file.”
“What did you make of it?”
“All seems straightforward. Only, what does it mean by habits?”
“Habits are for all day surveillance. Things like ‘x’ goes to the bakery every lunch time, or ‘x’ stops off at a certain pub on the way home. That kind of thing.”
“Ah, I see.”
“Take a seat. There’s a couple more things I want to go through with you. The box that Sylvia gave you, with the clothes and stuff in.”
Monica sits down and nods.
“That needs to go in the boot of your car. You must always have at least three pairs of high heels in there, two flats, and three different outfits. One cocktail dress, one suit, and one casual outfit.”
Monica’s forehead creases in confusion. “Why?”
“Sometimes when you are given an assignment to follow somebody, we don’t know where they are going to go. We have an idea, but that’s only what the client tells us, and sometimes they are way off the mark. We’ve had cases where we have expected our assignment to go into a bar, and instead they have wandered off into a high profile party.”
Fiona takes a sip of her coffee. “And should that happen you will more than likely need to change due to the dress code.”
“But what about if I need a ticket to get into certain affairs?”
“Then you use your womanly ways. And if that doesn’t work, find a back entrance or an open window.”
“Seriously?”
Fiona nods. “Obviously only if it’s safe to do so, and you aren’t going to get caught with your bottom hanging out of a window.” She smiles, before going on with a more serious tone. “Sometimes we have to call assignments off. But I must stress I do not want that to happen. You need to try your hardest to get the information requested. And yes, if that means you have to charm your way into an event by being a little flirtatious, so be it.”
Monica starts to question her decision on taking the job again.
Flirtatious? Me? I couldn’t flirt my way into a school disco.
“But there’s no need for you to worry about that. I’m convinced you can seduce any man on the planet to do whatever you want with that smile. And as for the box, remember, keep it in your boot.”
“I will.”
“Oh yes. I think it’s about time we spoke money. I will double the salary you were on at Read Reid, as promised, and you will be paid on the first of every month. In addition to that, I will pay for your travel expenses and fuel when you are out on an assignment. Plus, any money you spend while you’re out. Things like drinks and entry fees.”
Monica doesn’t grumble. What could she possibly moan about? She was getting every benefit possible.
“That all sounds too good to be true, if I’m honest.”
“Well it is true, so start smiling about it. You’ve just become part of an elite company with outrageous perks, you should be over the moon.”
“Sorry. It’s all just been a lot to take in. Three days ago I was plodding along like any other normal person, and now I’m part of... this. It’s just a lot for me to get my head around.”
“That’s perfectly understandable. I suggest you get home and rest before tonight’s shadowing. And remember, unless I state otherwise, you are my red headed, rouge-lipped Jessica Rabbit.”
“What should I wear tonight?”
“I suggest the smart-casual outfit that I requested for you from Sylvia. Which reminds me. Here.”
Fiona gives Monica her car keys. “Before you go, grab that box out of my boot and put it in yours. And take the equipment with you as well. I’ve had Amelia put your memory sticks and laptop in there too.”
